Most mobile phone masts in the UK are under 20m high, providing temporary service during mast routine maintenance or emergency repair the TDS tethered drone could be quickly deployed and easily provide coverage from flying heights up to 120m. With VHF and UHF radio antennas height is everything and provides improved coverage and is a better option than simply increasing the transmitting power. A height of 120 feet (37m) or even higher will provide even more advantages for long-distance communications. To a distant receiving station, a transmitting antenna at 120 feet will provide the effect of approximately 8 to 10 times more transmitting power than the same antenna at 35 feet (11m). The RNLI and MCA UKSAR in 3rd Dimension Challenge 2018 proved the perfect opportunity for TDS to demonstrate the excellent capabilities of a Tethered Drone. Providing a solution to the ongoing issue of marine band VHF dead-spots. TDS deployed and flew in high gusting wind conditions in South Wales near Nash Point, carrying the latest marine band ‘digital’ VHF radio repeater – provided by Fern Com – and was able to ensure that a Coast Guard team could communicate with their command post when their standard marine VHF radios had entered a dead-spot. The use of a digital repeater flying high above the cliffs provided the cover to ensure the mission could be completed. Marine band VHF or any other radio repeater could be deployed in-land or at the coast to significantly increase the radio range without the need to use other assets to form a radio relay.
